The Adirondack Kids New Book Release Book 13
View The Adirondack Kids® #13 is available beginning with Book Launch at The Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake, NY!

INLET (NY) - Justin, Carol and Gary VanRiper of Adirondack Kids Press are proud to announce the release of book number thirteen in The Adirondack Kids® series of adventure books for children and the young at heart.

In this brand new adventure, spring has arrived and beloved characters, Justin Robert and Nick Barnes are planning a bicycle race and find themselves caught up in an adventure revolving around the disappearance of Bug-Eye, the blackfly, from the famous Adirondack Carousel.

"Our new book has our longest title yet," said Adirondack Kids co-author, Justin VanRiper. "It's called, The Carousel Case, The Bicycle Race and The Blackfly Bad Guy. And it's our first Adirondack Kids story set in the spring."

"For some 10 years we have wanted to do a story involving the Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake and the Black Fly Challenge® in Inlet and Indian Lake Justin's dad and co-author Gary VanRiper. "We have been sitting on a basic storyline for a long time and with the Carousel's Grand Opening last Memorial Weekend, the timing to act on it finally worked out perfectly."

It was in 2010 when The Adirondack Kids® series of books officially passed 100,000 copies sold. The first printing of book number one was released in the spring of 2001 with 2,000 copies, which sold out within the first few months.

The VanRiper team has been writing one book a year now for thirteen years and what began as a fun father-and-son writing project has now grown into a small publishing company.

As early as 2002, the VanRipers were interviewed and featured in Writer's Digest's Writing Success Magazine and in 2004, The Adirondack Kids® was featured in Publishers Weekly, at that time unusual for self-published projects.

Their 5th book, Islands in the Sky won the first ever Adirondack Literary Award for Best Children's Book, presented by the Adirondack Center for Writing.

In 2007, they were dubbed "superstars of regional self-publishing" by writer Nancy Davis Kho in Adirondack Life magazine, and to date have appeared in countless schools, libraries, conferences and conventions in an effort to inspire young readers to keep on reading and young writers to keep on reading and writing.

Two major events scheduled for The Adirondack Kids® in 2013 include a book launch at the Adirondack Carousel on Saturday, May 25, of Memorial Day Weekend. Contact the Adirondack Carousel at www.adirondackcarousel.org for more information on the event or LIKE the official Facebook page - The Adirondack Kids®.

The Adirondack Kids New Book Release Book 12

OLD FORGE (NY) - Gary and Justin VanRiper, creators of The Adirondack Kids® series of children's chapter books, have been writing together for twelve years - and on Saturday, May 19, an exhibit of artwork from their beloved book series began a three-month run which continues through July 15 at View, the new arts center in Old Forge, New York. A special reception was held on opening day and featured the release of the brand new book in the series, The Adirondack Kids® #12 - The Pond Hockey Challenge.

"We are very excited about this generous opportunity View has provided to celebrate the work of our artists who over the years have helped to bring our characters to life," said Gary VanRiper.

More than 40 pieces of original art by illustrators Susan Loeffler and Carol VanRiper are currently on display, including the full-color cover art for all twelve books, poster and coloring book art, and a host of interior black-and-white illustrations. The exhibit area also features mounted animal and bird life featured in the Adirondack Kids adventures - and every child accompanied by an adult will receive a free copy of The Adirondack Kids® Story & Coloring Book. Refreshments will also be served.

The Adirondack Kids® actually began as a writing exercise at home when Justin was in third grade. Encouraged after a public reading of their piece at a Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) event at school, the project grew into a middle-reader chapter book.

When 2000 copies of their first book sold out in just three months, they began another story and for twelve years now have released one Adirondack Kids book in the series per year. To date more than 100,000 copies in the series have been sold.

It was while working on The Adirondack Kids® #4 - The Great Train Robbery when Justin handed his mom, Carol VanRiper, a photograph of the conductor at the Upper Hudson River Railroad and urged her to try drawing for the series. Upon seeing the results, he "hired" her on the spot. Carol has drawn all of the black and white interior illustrations ever since, making The Adirondack Kids® even more of a family affair.

Spring hours at View are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from Noon to 4 p.m. Exhibition admission is $8/$4 members and children under 12 are free. This includes admission to all exhibitions that run concurrently including the Northeast National Pastel Exhibition. View is a multi-arts center located at 3273 State Rt. 28 in Old Forge, NY. To learn more about View programming, including upcoming exhibits and receptions, visit www.ViewArts.org or call 315-369-6411.

CAMDEN (NY) - Justin, Carol and Gary VanRiper of Adirondack Kids Press are proud to announce the release of The Adirondack Kids #12 - The Pond Hockey Challenge, book number twelve in The Adirondack Kids® series of adventure books for children and the young at heart.

In this brand new adventure, winter has arrived and beloved characters, Justin Robert and Nick Barnes are on school break and discover their best friend, Jackie Salsberry, has committed them to a pond hockey game against an experienced team from the community next door.

"Some people saw the title of our 10th book, The Final Daze of Summer, and thought we were done with the series!" [the real] Justin said. "We just wanted to start writing stories with the Adirondack Kids having adventures in the fall and winter and spring."

"That's right," said Gary, co-creator of the series. "Last year we released our eleventh book with the story set in autumn. With hockey so big in the Adirondacks and the sport played everywhere and on everything from wilderness ponds to the Olympic arena, we thought it provided the perfect subject matter to carry our first story set in winter."

It was in 2010 when The Adirondack Kids® series of books officially passed 100,000 copies sold. The first printing of book number one was released in the spring of 2001 with 2,000 copies, which sold out within the first few months.

Adirondack Life Annual & The Fire Tower Challenge
Gary in ADK High Peaks
Gary in ADK High Peaks

JAY (NY) -The 2011 Adirondack Life Annual Guide features a story and photographs by Adirondack Kids co-author, Gary VanRiper. Entitled, The Fire Tower Challenge - A sky-high tour of rooms with a view, Gary confessed it was the first writing he has done outside of The Adirondack Kids® for a long time.

"Well, other than writing a 12 page sermon each week, " he said, and smiled. "And lending a twitter friend [popular Christian fiction author, Tricia Goyer] a hand with song titles for her book, Sunflower Serenade!"

The Adirondack Life Magazine

The article has already inspired some families and groups to hike the many mountains in the Adirondack Park that still host fire towers.

"It's an honor to be in the pages of this classic publication, and I don't want to give away too much here," Gary said. "But like our Adirondack Kids books, I hope the story, along with the other great articles in the Adirondack Life Guide, will encourage people of all ages and families and friends to get out and explore the Adirondacks and create their own unique adventures and lifelong memories."

The Adirondack Life Annual Guide is in stores right now! More information is also available at www.adirondacklife.com

Hiking Bald Mountain with Students & Teachers & Parents

OLD FORGE (NY) - When the call came from teachers at a regional public school asking if Gary and Justin could join them on their End-Of-The-Year School Trip, it was hard to resist.

The destination? Bald Mountain, setting for the second book in the Adirondack Kids series - Rescue on Bald Mountain.

"Justin was recently home from college and we were free the day of their trip," Gary said. "It was a pleasure to hike along with them."

Justin agreed. "It was especially fun to hear the kids talking to one another about things that happened in the book," he said. They kept asking us, "when are we going to be on the Dragon's Back?"

"One thing I didn't expect and was most moving to me, was that there were several military moms hiking with their children whose husbands and dads were in Afghanistan," Gary said. "We thanked those moms we met for their sacrifice and service, knowing that we owe our freedom to do all that we do, including writing and hiking, to them and all that their families have given up for ours."

In this brand new adventure featuring the regular cast of characters, Justin, Jackie and Nick scramble into action when they learn there is a Rare Bird Alert in the area. Captain Conall McBride makes a guest appearance in the story, and there are some new characters to meet along the way, including the Pie Lady.

The Adirondack Kids #10 - The Final Daze of Summer concludes The Summer Series which chronicles an entire summer of action-packed adventures.

"The stories were written in such a way that a reader can enter the series with any volume," said co-author Justin VanRiper. "But if you read all of them and watch closely, you can see we move week by week through a whole summer. We begin with a reunion at the beginning of the summer between Justin, Nick and Jackie - and end on Labor Day weekend." [The real] Justin smiles. "Sort of!"

Once again Carol VanRiper supplied the black and white illustrations and Susan Loeffler the full color wrap-around cover.

So, what is next for The Adirondack Kids®?

"With The Adirondack Kids® #11, our plan is to begin a Four Seasons Series of books," said co-author Gary VanRiper, "beginning with an adventure set in the autumn. We have wanted for some time to write several stories with Justin and Nick and Jackie and Dax involved in adventures during the autumn, winter and spring."

Do they know where in the Adirondacks the new story will be set?

The Adirondack Kids #8 Escape from Black Bear Mountain
What do Lake Champlain, Samuel de Champlain & Champ the Lake Monster have in common? The Adirondack Kids®!

PORT HENRY/CROWN POINT, NY - "Justin and I were brainstorming possibilities for our ninth Adirondack Kids book, and it was a friend who first told us about the legend of Champ in Lake Champlain," Adirondack Kids co-author Gary VanRiper said.

"We never knew Champ existed," co-author Justin VanRiper said. "We thought it might make a great story."

Nearly a year later, the result of that conversation is The Adirondack Kids® #9 - The Legend of the Lake Monster, released in early May of 2009, latest in the successful series of middle reader chapter books by the father-son writing team.

"I don't think I've ever had so much fun doing research for a story," Gary said. "We traveled to Port Henry and Crown Point and I was able to interview one of the nicest ladies who claims to be an actual eyewitness of the lake creature. Her account was quite amazing. " Gary explained the story seemed to write itself. "We work from outlines," he said. "And this story just unfolded as we traveled, providing one of the strongest outlines to work from we've ever had."

Carol VanRiper is black-and-white illustrator for the series. "When we arrived at Crown Point, people at the museum there were sure we were doing research for the book because of the 400th anniversary celebration coming to Lake Champlain in 2009," she said.

"That's right," said Gary. "We had no idea the event was going to happen, but there we were, writing about the lake monster and Samuel de Champlain for a book to be released just in time for the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain's discovery of the lake bearing his name!"

"All of the character's are back," Justin said, who wrote the Dax Facts section for the new book. "Justin, Jackie, Nick and Dax. And a new character was added just for this adventure."

Freelance artist, Sue Loeffler, did the full color cover, which Gary thinks is one of her best yet. "Every year we throw Sue and Carol new challenges and their artwork always exceed our expectations," Gary said. "We hope our fans will enjoy this latest adventure and all the illustrations as much as we all enjoyed doing the writing and drawing and painting."

The Adirondack Kids® #9 - Legend of the Lake Monster is in stores now or is available by using the order form on this website.

Follow The Adirondack Kids® 2009 Summer Book Tour

PORT HENRY/CROWN POINT, NY - ADIRONDACK PARK - 2009 appearances by The Adirondack Kids® team of writers and illustrator are well underway. Visit the Appearances Page on this website for scheduled places, dates and times! Below are highlights from last year's events.

Highlights from last year's 2008 tour!

The Adirondack Kids® tour began last year celebrating Justin's graduation from high school and with appearances at Barnes & Noble in both New Hartford and DeWitt, New York - helping to kick off the two stores' Summer Reading Program.

The coolest visitor at one of last year's signings was Gary's 2nd grade teacher, Miss Delaney - who brought a 1963 class photo, and a cast shot from the school play that year with Gary as, The King of Valentines! "I remember my main line from the play," Gary said. 'Valentines, Valentines, all I see are Valentines!' It was such an unexpected and pleasant surprise to see one of my elementary school teachers and brought to my mind all of the work and dedication of those teachers who poured into me as a young person. I can still remember every one of those elementary school teachers by name."

Justin's favorite story of the tour was when people attended a book signing and explained that they named their cat Dax. "But that wasn't all," Justin said. "Then their veterinarian asked them, 'oh, you mean like the Dax in the Adirondack Kids?'"

There were also annual visits to Old Forge, and Inlet along the Fulton Chain of Lakes; then Long Lake - that great summer event under a big tent with some 50 regional authors. Then it was on to Lake Placid, where they joined Adirondack Detective author, John Briant, at the Bookstore Plus for a dual signing.

The Summer Book Tour ended one week before taking Justin off for his freshman year in college, in the authors' Adirondack back yard at the Adirondack Reader with Reggie Chambers in Inlet.

Gary & Justin hope you can join them during The Adirondack Kids® 2009 Summer Book Tour. Be sure to call ahead to confirm appearances before traveling long distances!

The Adirondack Kids #8 Escape from Black Bear Mountain
The Adirondack Kids® #8 Escape from Black Bear Mountain

EAGLE BAY - The adventures of The Adirondack Kids® continue in, Escape from Black Bear Mountain, volume eight of the best-selling chapter book series by Adirondack Literary Award-winning authors, Justin and Gary VanRiper.

"Last summer we were trying to decide what this adventure would be about," said Justin VanRiper. "The Adirondack Kids® have had adventures in boats and on a plane and a train and Dax has even been in a bobsled and on a skateboard. We wondered what was left. Then I thought - how about a hot air balloon!"

And what is a hot air balloon doing in the story?

"You'll have to read the book to find out," said Justin.

Justin was in third grade when the first Adirondack Kids book was released. Today, he is 18, and in the autumn is headed for Houghton College. The father-and-son writing team has produced one new title in the series each year since 2001.

The Adirondack Kids ® #8 is once again set on the Fulton Chain of Lakes where both the fictional and the real Justin have family camps. Everyone's favorite characters are back including Justin Robert, Nick Barnes and Jackie Salsberry. And of course, Dax. This latest summer adventure involves what should be a simple hike up nearby Black Bear Mountain. Justin has a goal to climb all of the local mountains that have trails before summer vacation is over. He also wants to be the first boy to climb all of the mountains with a cat. If only the three friends had noticed the warning sign at the Black Bear Mountain trailhead The Adirondack Kids® #8 - Escape from Black Bear Mountain can be found in bookstores throughout the Adirondacks and at independent and chain bookstores throughout New York state beginning in April of 2008. Books from the series are also available right here on the official website of The Adirondack Kids®. Just click here to go to our Bookstore.

BORDERS HELPS LAUNCH NEW BOOK

SYRACUSE, NY - Borders at Carousel Center in Syracuse, NY recently helped Adirondack Kids co-authors Justin and Gary VanRiper celebrate the release of their latest book, Escape from Black Bear Mountain, as part of the store's Educator's Savings week. The good folks at Borders went an extra mile and also helped Justin celebrate his 18th birthday, complete with a sheet cake featuring the new book's cover! The VanRipers thank manager Alan Mash, the Borders staff and all those who stopped by for the book-signing, for making the event extra special.

The Adirondack Kids® - The Musical!

PENFIELD, NY - The creative teachers at Scribners Elementary School surprised the authors of The Adirondack Kids with a musical production based on their first book, complete with tap dancing loons! The script called for three Justins - one as narrator, one as actor, and one inside a sleeping bag with a flashlight! Special sets included the ice cream stand, video games for the arcade and large backdrops dressed as the Adirondack landscape. There were even jet skis made using scooters! The photo with the Pied Piper sign features the real Justin with the student actors who played Justin and Nick.

SUPERSTARS OF REGIONAL PUBLISHING

JAY, NY - "The VanRipers are considered superstars of regional self-publishing..." That's what Nancy Davis Kho wrote in her article, Why Self Publishing Works for Regional Writers, in the June 2007 issue of Adirondack Life Magazine.

Adirondack Kids Press was established by the VanRipers some eighth years ago to launch The Adirondack Kids® series of self-published books. 2000 copies of the first book were printed and within several months they were gone. What began as a family project to keep Justin interested in reading has turned into a small company with thousands of readers across the country. The VanRipers publish one new Adirondack Kids title every year, and hope soon to break the 100,000 copy mark for total number of Adirondack Kids books in print!

On the Road with the Authors of The Adirondack Kids®

ADIRONDACK PARK, NY - Gary and Justin and Carol VanRiper continue to tour with The Adirondack Kids® book series.

"We are visiting so many places in the Park where we have never been before," said Carol VanRiper, (wife, mom, bookkeeper, public relations head and interior illustrator!). "Last year, we visited a number of schools, libraries, book stores and conventions," she said. "Justin only does a few school visits per season, but I keep Gary busy most of the school year."

Every year the Summer Book Tour lands them in Old Forge, Inlet, Long Lake and Lake Placid. Keep checking the Appearances Page on this website for 2008 visits. And always call venues ahead and confirm appearances before traveling to a public event!

Below are a few photos from last year's visits.

Special Note: Our computer crashed at the close of the summer before we backed up our shots, and we lost nearly all of the season's photos, including special shots of our very first Adirondack 46Readers! Thanks to Nancy Davis Kho and other friends for helping us recover some memories on film!
